Chickens, Are They Right For Me? Do I Have Enough Space?

Updated: Jul 24, 2020

Do chickens require a lot space? Well, they do require enough space. If you are going to have your chickens "Cooped Up" and area outside to freely roam. Then your coop should be big enough to accommodate at least a minimum of 10 square feet per bird. If you have a chicken coop equipped with a run you could get by with your coop being big enough to accommodate 2 square feet per bird as long as your run can accommodate 10 square feet per bird. The 2 square feet per bird coop can also be done if you free range your chickens daily.

Chickens are healthier and happier with more space in their coops and outside them. Chickens love to forage. They love eating insects, grasses, weeds, and much more that they can find in your yard, farm or homestead.

If your chickens do not have a big enough space outside their coop, then they will destroy more of the area they do have. Keep in mind that chickens obsessively scratch up soil. They peck at everything they find. Chickens dig holes for their "Dust Baths". They also really love love to eat leaves, plants and weeds. So if your run area is too small they will eat up all the vegetation and create a dust bowl out of it in about a week. So if they have a large enough run area or if you let them free range, your yard will benefit greatly. They can help aerate the soil by their scratching. Their poo droppings will help fertilize your yard. They will also help in decreasing the grubs, ticks and other insects in your yard.
