Chickens, Are They Right For Me? Does My Town, County or City Allow Chickens?

Updated: Jul 24, 2020

Will my town, county or city allow me to have chickens? Well, the sad truth is that not all towns, counties or cities do. You will need to check first before you get chickens. In some areas the health board may not have any regulations against you owning chickens. Then you should check with the zoning board to see if they have any. Some, people have to apply for an expensive variance in order to own chickens. Now, even in towns, counties or cities that allow chickens they may have special rules or regulations concerning their poo disposal. They may also have rules or regulations concerning the distance required from your coop to your property lines, etc. If you're interested in owning roosters with your hens you should also find out if their is a local noise ordinance or regulations. Because, if you have neighbors, and they are not so fond of your rooster crowing when the sun comes up and all through out the day. All they have to do is file a complaint and you will be forced to re-home your roosters. If you are not sure of the rules or regulations of your town, county or city, then contact your local Health Board, Zoning Board and even your Agriculture Dept. so you won't have an upsetting surprises.
