Hmm... Let's see, do I want Standard or Bantam chickens? Standard Chickens, which are normal sized chickens, they are also known as Large Fowl. Bantam Chickens are smaller chickens, they are known as Bantams. Bantams usually range from 10 ounces to 2 pounds for each bird. They are mainly owned and raised as ornamental birds. They are flashy, cute and small. Bantams tend to lay eggs less frequently and their eggs tend to be smaller. Because they are smaller they can be more susceptible to predators, such as crows. Now crows will not go after the standard chickens due to them being bigger in size.
Bantams and Standard chickens also have their own breeds, meaning that like Silkies, Belgian Bearded D'Uccles and Seabrights only are available as a Bantam. They do not come in the Standard size at all. Then on the other hand Standard Chickens also have breeds that do not come in the Bantam size. Many breeds you can get in both sizes. You can combine them. You can have Standard and Bantams in your same coop, flock etc. Heck you could even mix and match. Some people worry that the Bantams may fall on the low end of the pecking order of their flock due to their size. But, don't let size fool you, Bantams and be on the top end of your pecking order calling all the shots. In the end no matter which breed you choose, their will be a hen at the top and the bottom of the pecking order of your coop or flock.
