Let's Talk Chickens. How Many Chickens Should I Get?

Let's keep in mind that chickens are social birds. They like having other chickens around to interact with. So, in regards to them being social, we would recommend you to have at least a minimum between 3 to 6 birds. Now, if you are buying chicks, you will also have to check with your state on buying requirements on the amount of chicks you have to purchase at one time. Here in Virginia and in many other states, there is a minimum of 6 chicks that have to purchased each time. Now, you can buy more than 6 chicks at a time, but you can't buy less than 6 chicks at any given time here in Virginia. So, that is something to think about as well. If you are wanting to own or raise chickens for their eggs then you would need 3 to 4 hens per each family member. Having at least 3 to 4 hens per family member should cover your egg needs very well for your family. You may even have a dozen of eggs to give away occasionally.
