Let's Talk Chickens. What if I Live In A Cold Climate?

There are some breeds of chickens to completely avoid if you live in a cold climate. If where you live tends to stay cold or drops below freezing during part or all of the year, you need to select cold hardy chickens. Freezing occurs when the temperature of air falls below the freezing point of water (0 degrees celsius/32 degrees farhrenheit). This can be mesaured at the height of 1.2 m above the grounds' surface. When it come to size of your chickens, the bigger the more cold hardier. Standard chickens are hardier than Bantams. This is due to their body size. The bigger the chicken's body is the more heat that they will have. Now, when it comes to frostbite on your chickens' comb or wattles, the smaller they are, the less susceptible they are.

Below is a list of great cold hardy breeds of chickens:

Barhmas

Chanteclers

Cochins

Easter Eggers

Langshans

Marans

Orpingtons

Plymouth Rocks

Sussexes
